The Sea Gateway to Beijing

When a cruise itinerary says “Beijing,” the ship actually docks at Tianjin, a major port city on the Bohai Sea. Tianjin is northern China’s largest cruise homeport and the starting point for Great Wall and Forbidden City tours.

Tianjin’s cruise home port lies in the Binhai New Area, on the coast east of the city center. Beijing is a long drive away, so a “Beijing” port day is a full day of travel and sightseeing. Many international voyages solve this with an overnight in Tianjin, or by starting or ending the cruise here so you can spend several nights in Beijing on land.

Tianjin’s 2026 Season

Ship2026 notes

VisioJoined in late June 2026 for the summer, making Tianjin a two-ship homeport for the season

The port recorded its 100th cruise call of 2026 in early August, and October’s National Day holiday brought three ships in a single day. These homeport ships mainly serve Chinese travelers; international guests more often visit Tianjin on longer Asia voyages. Our cruise advisors at Mister Cruise will check which options fit your dates.

Beijing and the Great Wall From the Ship

Great Wall watchtower
Mutianyu and Badaling are the Great Wall sections most often visited on tours.

Shore excursions from Tianjin usually head for the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and Temple of Heaven in Beijing, or for a restored section of the Great Wall such as Mutianyu or Badaling. Trying to see both in one port day is possible but tiring. If you have an overnight, split them across two days.

Our sister site lists Beijing and Tianjin shore excursions with durations, so you can judge how much fits into your time in port.

Getting to the Port

If your cruise starts or ends in Tianjin, you will most likely fly into one of Beijing’s two international airports or into Tianjin’s own airport. High-speed trains link Beijing and Tianjin in around half an hour, but the cruise port is on the coast, well beyond the main city stations, so you still need a road transfer at the end. Many travelers book a transfer package through the cruise line or our advisors, which takes the guesswork out of a long day of travel. Spending a few nights in Beijing before the cruise gives you time for the Forbidden City and the Great Wall without rushing.

Tianjin Itself

If you prefer a shorter day, Tianjin has its own sights: the European-style villas of the Five Great Avenues, the Italian Style Town, the Tianjin Eye Ferris wheel over the Hai River, and lively food streets. A half-day here leaves time to relax back on board.

  • Start early: Beijing tours leave soon after the ship is cleared; be ready at the meeting time.
  • Traffic: allow for heavy traffic around Beijing, especially on holidays and weekends.
  • Documents: carry your passport or the cruise landing document the ship provides; see visa rules.
